What to know BEFORE you buy a Chihuahua

Please keep in mind how WONDERFUL this breed is. These are loyal, lovable, and adorable dogs! Well worth the effort…
  1. Buying a Chihuahua is a long-term commitment
Chihuahuas live 12-18 years, so keep in mind how long you will have your chi. Are you ready for that commitment?
  2. Chihuahuas are not kid friendly
Although you can train your chi to become friendly with your own children, they will not be friendly to your children’s friends since they take a long time to warm up to strangers. You also want to keep in mind that Chihuahuas also have a difficult time getting along with dogs outside their breed. However, you can help them overcome this through a socialization class.
  3. Chihuahuas are fragile
Chihuahuas are very fragile dogs. Their bones can break, they get cold easily (and therefore need clothes), and their stomachs are often sensitive. Be ready to visit the veterinarian regularly.
  4. Chihuahuas need attention
New owners often underestimate how much attention their Chihuahua needs. When I first purchased my Chihuahua, he cried through the night until I let him sleep with me. If you work full-time, be ready to hire a dog walker. This breed not only loves attention, but needs it to be healthy!
If you are ready for this commitment, prepare for a loyal, loving, and drop-dead adorable dog that you will love and will love you!
