Chihuahua Wants:
- Treats:
Treats can be tricky. You need to consider how you want to train your dog (I used the clicker method). You’ll find many different kinds at the grocery store so do some research before choosing–it really depends on your dog. I use organic carrots. I’ve found that most chihuahuas love carrots–plus they are healthy and promote dental health! - Bones:
Bones can be a great way to keep your chihuahua entertained while you are at work or running errands. For chihuahuas, you want to make sure that the bones are small enough. If you have light carpet, you also want to make sure that they are not basted heavily–they will stain! - Tooth brush:
Yep–I said it. Dogs need their teeth brushed too. If you want to save money at the veterinarian’s (if your pup’s teeth become decayed he/her will need the tooth removed which can be a bit pricey – typically around $500!) you are going to want to brush his/her teeth 2-3 times a week. You may also consider buying a bulk container of “greenies” which you can find at your local grocery or pet store. - Heat Pad:
As I said earlier, chihuahuas love to be warm! Buying a small heat pad at Target or Bed, Bath, & Beyond make great beds for these little animals. They will love you for it! Be careful they are drinking plenty of water and not overheating. - A car seat:
Many chihuahuas are terrified of riding in cars, but many also love tagging along with their owners! If you are going to take your chihuahua on a car ride it is always recommended to put them in a doggy car seat. - Toys:
Chihuahuas are very playful dogs and enjoy playing with toys. Especially if you are going to be working full-time you will want to make sure that your dog has plenty of toys. I recommend small furry toys that resemble real animals. Sometimes I will buy cat toys as they are sized better for this tiny breed! - Attention:
Chihuahuas want petting, kissing, hugging, and all of its owner’s attention!
Here is an additional list of Chihuahua Essentials recommended by BeDogSavvy.com:
Chihuahua dogs need certain essential items to live comfortably and happily. Without knowing what these items are, you may feel overwhelmed when you walk into your local pet store, or browse through dog stuff online. The first aspect you need to understand is that most of the things you see are not necessity items, and are for decoration or spoiling your pet more than anything else.
Thus, the following are the items you should consider for chihuahua dogs (from chihuahuasavvy.com) -
Dog dishes – Your little guy will need a water and food bowl – the smaller the size the better. Choose ceramic or stainless steal dishes, as plastic bowls are more susceptible to bacteria growth.
Dog bed – Your chi should be given a small dog bed. You can purchase him a nesting bed, pillow, or designer bed. However, regardless of your personal preference, make sure your pet’s resting area has a soft and cushy bottom, is washable, and provides him with enough room to stretch out fully.
Crate – A small sized crate should be ideal for chihuahua dogs. Essentially, you want a metal crate that your pooch can easily stand up and turn around in when he is fully grown. Crates are ideal when it comes to housebreaking. It also provides him with a safe place to rest that he can call his own, and is the perfect place to secure him when you leave him home alone.
Collar and Harness – Chis require both collars and harnesses. A collar is where you can place his ID and vaccination tags, while a harness is what you should use when you walk your pal to avoid injuring his neck, which can occur with a collar. Take your pooch with you to the pet store when you fit him for the first time, as it is essential you provide him with the right sizes. Nylon is a good choice for both items, as it is very durable. That said, you will find other available materials include cotton, metal, leather and plastic.
Leash – You can choose different leashes for chihuahua dogs, but a thin, 6-inch nylon lead is ideal for walking your chi. If you would like to provide your pooch with more running room, you can also obtain a 16-inch retractable leash for small sized canines.
Sweater – The chihuahua breed is sensitive to cool temperatures, and should be provided with a sweater when he is walked in the cool autumn, and cold winter months. You will find that there are many garments you can provide your pet including rain coats, t-shirts, hoodies, and boots.
Toys – Every canine needs a good toy. Toys help you bond with your dog during playtime, keeps him entertained, and deters him from chewing up other household and personal belongings. Good toy suggestions include kongs, rope toys, nylabones, plush toy, and balls. Remember to obtain the size best suited to your buddy for optimal play and enjoyment.
While you can provide your chihuahua dogs with many other doggie items, the above are the basics that no little pooches should be without.
