Exercise
There are numerous health benefits to exercise. Although chihuahuas require less exercise than larger breeds, it is still important that some exercise is integrated into their daily routine. Typically, I try to exercise my chihuahuas at least 10 minutes. If you are walking your chihuahua outside there are a few points to remember.
- Chihuahuas are small and their necks are fragile. I recommend investing in a harness. They are sold at most major retail and pet stores. Here is a helpful video on how to put on your chi’s harness (they can be tricky!)
- Chihuahuas are sensitive to the elements so keep this in mind. A good rule to keep in mind – If YOU need a jacket so does your chi. If it’s below 45 degrees and above 80 degrees it’s probably a good idea to keep the exercise indoors.
- Give your chi a rest every 1/4 mile or so. Chihuahuas are known for having hypoglycemia so give them occasional breaks.
- Try to find a quiet walk as chihuahuas are hypervigilant and may feel threatened if surrounded by a lot of people and/or pets.
