Tip of the Month:
After cleaning up your chi's accident (if he/she is not yet house broken), sprinkle a bit of baking soda over the cleanup -- the baking soda will soak up any remaining urine you missed.

The Chihuahua

History

According to the American Kennel Club, the chihuahua breed is the progeny of the "Techichi," a popular companion dog of the ancient Toltecs. Some believe that the "Techichi" was alive prior to the age of the Mayans--even before the 1500's. The chihuahua is believed to have been brought to the American continent by Christopher Columbus. Chihuahuas have also been found (and received their name "chihuahua") from the state of Mexico, "Chihuahua." In otherwords, chihuahuas have been a popular pet for thousands of years!

Although history appears to support that the chihuahua primarily resided in Central and South America, there is no stopping the migration of this lovable breed! In almost every country throughout the world, the chihuahua has become one of the most popular breed of dogs. There is no resisting this lovable, adorable, loyal breed!

Temperament & General Information

The chihuahua is a very unique breed in terms of temperament. Chihuahuas are famous for being yappy yet lovable, protective yet loyal. They are fragile little dogs (therefore not the best fit for a family with children) that require clothing and careful handling. Chihuahuas have a tendency to bark as a means to protect owners against other dogs and strangers. Chihuahuas are social beings, therefore requiring constant attention. If you are going to be a busy chihuahua owner, you may want to consider buying your chi a companion.

Chihuahuas are classified by the AKC in the Toy group and are not officially chihuahuas if they weigh over six pounds. There are two fur types: long-hair and short-hair. Long- haired chihuahuas resemble pomeranians while short-haired have a distinct look. There are two types of chihuahuas: apple-heads and deer chihuahuas. Appleheads have a round head and a snout like nose, while deer chihuahuas have longer legs and a snout that blends smoothly into their head. Deer chihuahuas often resemble french greyhounds.
